Interferential Current (IFC) Electrical Stimulation
Relieve Pain. Reduce Muscle Spasms. Move More Comfortably.
Pain can make it difficult to move, exercise, and recover from an injury. Interferential Current (IFC) Electrical Stimulation is a comfortable, non-invasive treatment that helps reduce pain, relax muscles, and prepare your body for healing.
At Integrated Therapy, LLC, IFC is often used as part of a comprehensive treatment program that includes manual therapy, therapeutic exercise, dry needling, cold laser therapy, and movement retraining.
What Is Interferential Current (IFC)?
Interferential Current (IFC) is a form of electrical stimulation that delivers gentle electrical currents through adhesive electrodes placed on the skin around the painful area.
Unlike traditional electrical stimulation, IFC uses two medium-frequency currents that intersect deep within the tissues. This creates a low-frequency therapeutic current that can reach deeper structures while remaining comfortable for most patients.
Many patients describe the sensation as a gentle tingling or soothing massage.
How Does IFC Work?
The electrical currents stimulate sensory nerves and may help:
- Block pain signals traveling to the brain
- Reduce muscle spasms and muscle guarding
- Increase local blood circulation
- Decrease inflammation
- Promote relaxation of tight muscles
- Improve tissue healing by allowing more comfortable movement
- Prepare muscles and joints for exercise and manual therapy
Because IFC can penetrate deeper tissues comfortably, it is often effective for pain involving muscles, joints, ligaments, and soft tissues.
Conditions That May Benefit from IFC
Interferential Current may be used to help treat:
- Neck pain
- Low back pain
- Sciatica
- Shoulder pain
- Knee pain
- Hip pain
- Arthritis
- Muscle strains
- Ligament sprains
- Sports injuries
- Post-surgical pain and swelling
- Tendinitis
- Muscle spasms
- Chronic pain conditions
What Does Treatment Feel Like?
During treatment, small adhesive electrodes are placed around the painful area. The electrical current is gradually increased until you feel a comfortable tingling sensation.
Treatment is painless and relaxing. Most sessions last 10–20 minutes, and many patients experience reduced pain and improved movement afterward.
